Choosing Curtains for a Dubai Home

Curtains do more work in Dubai than almost anywhere else. They temper fierce daylight, hold back heat, buy privacy in close-set communities and set the entire mood of a room — and they do it across windows that are often floor-to-ceiling or double height. Get them right and a room feels calm, cool and finished; get them wrong and even a beautifully designed space feels unresolved. This guide walks through every decision, from sheers versus blackout to fabric, headings, measuring and care.

Why curtains matter more in the Gulf

Three local realities shape every curtain decision in the UAE:

• Intense daylight. The sun is strong for most of the year. Bare glass means glare, heat gain and faded furniture; the right layers turn that light into a soft, usable glow.
• Heat and energy. A well-lined curtain is genuine thermal insulation at the window — it reduces the load on your AC and the cost that comes with it.
• Privacy and scale. Villas and apartments often sit close together, and windows are large. Curtains provide privacy without sacrificing daylight, and they bring human scale and softness to tall, hard-surfaced rooms.

Start with the layers

The single most useful idea in window dressing is layering on a double track: a sheer nearest the glass, and a heavier curtain in front. Each does a different job.

The sheer layer

The main drape

In front sits the decorative, functional layer — a jacquard like Aria for pattern and a soft sheen, or a plain weave for a quieter look. Add a blackout or dim-out lining where you need darkness and insulation. This is the layer that closes at night for privacy, sleep and heat control.

Choosing the fabric

• Jacquard (e.g. Aria): a woven pattern with subtle sheen and body; drapes into deep, even folds. The luxurious all-rounder for living rooms, bedrooms and the majlis.
• Sheer (e.g. Luméra): light, airy, luminous; for the inner layer or a minimalist single-layer window.
• Plain and textured weaves: for a calm, contemporary scheme where the architecture or the view is the feature.
• Blackout lining: not a look but a function — added behind any drape for bedrooms, media rooms and west-facing glazing.

Whatever the style, favour high-quality polyester over natural silk or cotton for curtains in Dubai: it resists the sun far better and keeps its colour for years. Room by room

• Living room & majlis: sheer + jacquard drape is the default. Floor-length, generous fullness, often wall-to-wall to make the window feel grander and the room calmer.
• Bedrooms: sheer for the day plus a blackout-lined drape for true darkness and cool sleep. Consider wall-mounted, ceiling-fixed tracks to gain height.
• Dining & formal rooms: a richer jacquard, sometimes with a pelmet or a wave heading for a clean modern line.
• Kitchens & bathrooms: simpler, washable treatments or blinds; curtains here are the exception.

Headings and hardware

The heading — how the top of the curtain is gathered — sets the character:

• Wave / ripple-fold: soft, uniform S-curves; the contemporary favourite, especially on tracks and motorised systems.
• Pinch pleat (double/triple): tailored, traditional, formal; beautiful in a jacquard.
• Eyelet: casual and simple; less common in high-end villa schemes.

Measuring and made-to-measure

This is where ready-made curtains fall down. Two numbers decide whether curtains look luxurious or flat:

• Fullness: the finished curtain should use fabric equal to roughly 2 to 2.5 times the track width. That is what creates deep, even folds. Ready-made panels almost never carry enough fabric for a villa window.
• Drop: curtains should reach the floor — either just kissing it, or with a deliberate 2–4 cm break, or a luxurious puddle. Short curtains are the single most common mistake and instantly cheapen a room.

Hang tracks high and wide — close to the ceiling and extending beyond the glass — so windows read taller and wider and the curtains stack off the glass when open. All of this is why we measure and make to order rather than sell off the shelf.

Caring for curtains in the Dubai climate

• Manage the sun: a sheer layer and a good lining protect the main drape; solar-control glazing or film cuts UV further and slows any fading.
• Dust regularly: fine desert dust settles in folds — a monthly vacuum with a soft brush keeps fabrics fresh.
• Clean professionally: lined and interlined curtains should be dry-cleaned or specialist-cleaned rather than machine-washed, to keep their shape.

What it costs

Made-to-measure curtains in Dubai generally run from around AED 250 to AED 900+ per square metre of finished curtain, driven by fabric, lining, heading and hardware. A typical living-room window with sheers and lined drapes commonly lands between AED 3,000 and AED 9,000; motorisation adds to that.
